Episode 121

Stephane Cornicard: The one with the Kitty Cat Club!

In ep 121 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, voice actor and director Stephane Cornicard joins Sam and Mark to direct them through a specifically written gaming side... full of emotion and hidden depths. He shows us how to access a more nuanced performance - and then notches it up several gears when we use the same script for the wildcard!

Our VO question this week is all about dubbing and some of the surprising changes in that side of the industry beginning to be used.

Get involved! Have you got a Wildcard suggestion that we should try or an idea for the show? Send it to us via Mark or Sam's social media or email it directly to podcast@britishvoiceover.co.uk

Script 1

An orphan brought up in the slums of Big-city, Eartha had to fight all her life to make it to the top of the heap. Her first memory is of being stuffed in a sack and tossed into the river. She managed to rip her way out, and since then, she has had to fight for everything she owns. She now performs in her own Jazz club in the heart of Big-city, where she’s created a community of sorts with all the “Unwanted” of society. The only way past Kittty is through her heart. Fiercely independent, she is a strong, fierce individual without patience for injustice.

Interior night, Kitty Cat Club Cabaret, Eartha’s dressing room.

Hello ? Whoever you are, don’t just stand outside, come on in. Don’t be shy... I can hear you... wantin’, waitin’, wastin’, behind my door, so... (She sighs) Just come in and get it over with. I won’t bite... Well, let’s just say I might not. (Door opens) Oh... oh my... well, that is a surprise... (She recovers) What ? No flowers ? Oh well... Don’t just stand there, like a wet dog... Get in the light so I can see you better... Aow, You haven’t changed. May-be a bit thicker around the waist, a bit greyer around the whiskers, a bit sadder around the eyes... (She sighs) and while I rush to sieve the sands of time from your face, you’re busy doing the same right back at me, aren’t you ? (she smiles and does a turn) Well Captain, what’s the verdict ? Huh? (Silence)

(She sings )

“In them days / that rimed always, / til that day, / that stole away... my heart...”

(A sad chuckle)

What do you want Captain ? Why are you here after all these years, after all this silence? Cause I don’t think it’s to hear me sing ?
