Episode 95

Simon Wells: The one with No Emotional Inflection!

In episode 95 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by Voxbox, Simon Wells joins Sam and Mark to talk about recording English scripts for a foreign audience learning the language. We meet an angry dad or two, and get a surprise about what a script is really about! We turn anger into joy, have a moment of purring with a cat character, and there's a take on a European mad professor!

Our VO question this week is all about whether improvisation informs your reads.

Script 1

Do you dream of flying to the Moon? If so, you should start training for it now!

First, you need to have a strong body, so exercise every day and develop healthy living habits.

Second, learn about space science and the moon by studying and reading books.

Finally, you should also learn how to pilot a spaceship.

These steps will help make your dream come true.

Script 2

Can’t you just admit you're not ready to make your own choices? look at yourselves! You ended up on the side of the highway in a camping tent that’s missing a pole, you pretty much stole our car, and neither of you have a licence when I last checked, and you had sex - the one rule we had while living under our roof you were not allowed, the one rule. You broke it. This is not good decision making.

About our guest:

Simon Wells is a London based voiceover, specialising in corporate work and e-learning, with the occasional character voice thrown in for fun. He had an unusual journey into voiceover, having left his previous job as a postie, after a back injury. His dream is to get into animation and gaming, as character voices are what he loves most.

He's a podcaster too, and runs FACTORALY, in which he and fellow VO Bruce Fielding chat about fun facts and useless information around a different subject each week. Simon loves exploring London, seeing live music and doing improv.
